Honk If You Love Taxonomies: Value and Affinity

I'm in a little bit of a tailspin trying to think about What To Do (With My Life); and last night talking to pit crew, I dusted off a few old taxonomies that might be useful for this discussion:

The Munt Scale for Value

0 1 2 3 4 5
BAD NOT GOOD NOT HALF GOOD NOT HALF BAD NOT BAD GOOD

This is for how good you think something is, as opposed to...

The Munt Scale for Affinity

0 1 2 3 4 5
HATE KILE DON'T LOVE DON'T HATE LIKE LOVE

Which is for how much you like something. This affinity scale never quite worked before; but it works now with kile, because... it's best that I don't try to explain why it didn't work, isn't it.

I wish I could promise you that there's a method to my madness, but I fear this is just madness in service of other madness. To be continued!

Broccoli and Cannellini Bean Pasta Salad alla Zombea

1 bunch broccoli
1 jar pine nuts
12 oz whole wheat gemelli
1 can cannellini beans
1/2 red onion or 2-3 shallots
3 Tbsp orange juice
salt
pepper
thyme
1/4 cup olive oil

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Trim, wash, and cut broccoli into bite-size florets. Thinly slice onions or shallots. Toss the broccoli, onion or shallots, and pine nuts on a cookie sheet with just a tiny bit of olive oil and salt. Roast until broccoli is spotted golden brown, stirring around after ten minutes and about twenty minutes total. (To keep the pine nuts from burning, protect them under the broccoli or add them halfway through roasting.)

Bring water to a boil for the pasta, dump in the pasta & cook until al dente, about five minutes or according to package directions. While the pasta is cooking, rinse and drain the cannellini beans. Drain the pasta right over the chickpeas in the colander, and let it all cool.

Measure the orange juice into a large bowl and season generously with salt, pepper, and thyme, then whisk in the olive oil. Stir in everything else.

Good on its own, or on a green salad.

Per 1/6 recipe, probably around 350 calories. Per 1/8 recipe on green salad, probably around 300 calories.

The Underachiever's Guide To Swinging Your Arms When You Walk (And When You Skate)

Interesting, this just in from Yahoo News: Out on a limb: Arm-swinging riddle is answered.

Among other things, "Holding one's arms as one walks requires 12 percent more metabolic energy, compared with swinging them." It's like how they say smiling takes fewer muscles than frowning, which I've always loved. Don't smile because you're happy, smile because you're lazy. Yeah.

But it must be the same for skating. Swinging your arms, not smiling. To judge by most photos, I don't smile when I skate. I should try that, and see if it makes me faster. Back to arms though, it does check out with me that swinging my arms is somehow more efficient for skating. It's part of the machine, I feel that I'm skating right when I'm feeling like a machine.

Oh, wait. What about for losing weight. Which way to do I have to walk to lose more weight. KIDDING.

The Underachiever's Guide To Working Out: Stretch and Balance

On the other hand, I like writing my blog. I'm not writing this for myself like I'm my boss, I'm writing this for myself like it's a present & that makes me feel good. When you're pressed for time, it's terrible to give up the thing that makes you feel good!

So anyway, a few weeks ago somebody in the rollerderbycoaches yahoo group pointed to this article in the New York Times How To Fix Bad Ankles. Read the article for the science; it's already almost eleven, and I don't know where the morning's gone & I figure this blog is not so much about providing reportage, but for me to actually try stuff & tell you how it goes for me, just for laughs.

So here's me brushing my teeth, balancing on one foot—

I should say that I am nothing if not thorough about brushing my teeth. The first time pit crew saw me sitting on the edge of the tub, brushing, he patted my head and said, "Aw, you're all tuckered out! No wonder you have to sit down!" Seriously, I had to stop using those electronic toothbrushes that beep to tell you to move to the next quadrant of your mouth. I couldn't keep up. Later I learned that the beeps are actually to signal people to stay for at least thirty seconds in each quadrant. Like most people rush through brushing their teeth in under two minutes! This is also why the question of whether you leave the water running when you brush your teeth never made sense to me. Of course you turn it off, it's like twenty minutes...

So maybe this will actually help me not brush all the enamel off my teeth, because life expectancies are getting longer all the time & it would be better not to wear my teeth down to nubs. And also I will have excellent balance, and less likely to fall and break my hip when I'm a hundred and twenty.

Okay, for real now:

Start with some quad stretches:

  • Toothbrush in your right hand, clasp your left ankle behind you with your left hand. Tuck in your hips and point your knee straight down. Pick a sextant of your mouth, say, upper right. Brush outside ten counts, underside ten counts, inside ten counts.
  • Release your leg, move to upper front. Brush outside ten counts, inside ten counts.
  • Toothbrush in left hand —this is super hard for me— clasp your right ankle behind you with your right hand, tuck and point as above. Move to upper left, outside ten counts, underside ten counts, inside ten counts.

I know, right? I'm totally bonkers.

Now some balances, you can keep your toothbrush in your dominant hand for all these. It's probably good brainwork to switch, I feel bad if I think my teeth aren't getting good and brushed:

  • Standing on your left foot, brushing lower left: outside ten counts, topside ten counts, inside ten counts.
  • Standing on both feet, brushing lower front: outside ten counts, inside ten counts.
  • Standing on your right foot, brushing lower right: outside ten counts, topside ten counts, inside ten counts.

Like it says in the article, make it more challenging if it's too easy. It's funny to do with your hair in a towel on your head. I can balance on my left with my eyes closed, but not on my right yet. Yet!

ETA: I was visualizing this in my head, and actually I brush each section of a sextant a third at a time for a count of ten; so that's ninety seconds for the sides and sixty seconds for the fronts. What. I only had to think of it because I wanted to know how long to balance on each foot!

The Underachiever's Guide To Working Out: Stretch and Crunch

This post is not for the people who get up at 5:00 AM to get in their workouts before their families are out of bed and wanting breakfast. It's not that I don't believe you that it's really nice to have your alone time and all that. I wouldn't even say that I'm not a morning person, I'm perfectly chipper in the morning, say, around eight or preferably nine...

Well, who am I kidding. All of these posts are for myself. And if all of these posts are for myself, why do I feel bad that I feel like I can't keep up with them; why don't I just give myself a break.

My work even spots me a half hour every morning, I don't have to be in until nine-thirty. It's a compromise, they do without me for just a little bit & I drag myself out of sleep just a little bit before my body clock is set to wake up. I'm not doing cardio in this condition and forget lifting weights, getting out of bed is good enough.

Still though, I read this article in Yahoo News that people who burn little bits of energy here and there through the day maintain their weight better than people who ...don't. Not better than the people who wake up at 5:00 AM, if you thought that was what I was going to say. Nobody is better than those people. I'm not trying to be better than those people, I'm just trying to be a little bit better than I am. And also if I can chuck 50 calories per morning against my weekly 3500 calorie deficit and still stay in bed, so much the better.

Start with some doll stretches:

  1. Lie flat on your back and raise your right leg ninety degrees. Gently pull your leg toward your chest and hold for, like, ten seconds.
  2. Cross your right ankle over your left knee, reach through and clasp your left shin, and gently pull and hold.
  3. Further cross your right knee over your left knee, reach around and clasp your left shin, and gently pull and hold.
  4. Put your right foot on the bed, drop your right knee to the left and look to the right for a spinal twist.

Switch legs and repeat the above.

Now do some little bitty crunches. Shannanigan showed these to us at last Thursday's practice, and I have to say that I was thinking at the time that these would be good to do in bed:

  1. Lie flat on your back and raise both arms ninety degrees, crossing them at the wrists. Reach up with your shoulders to raise and then lower your upper torso just a little bit, say, ten times.
  2. Point your arms to the left, to about 10 or 11 o'clock, and reach up with your right shoulder to raise and then lower your upper torso to the left just a little bit, ten times.
  3. Point your arms to the right, to about 1 or 2 o'clock, and reach up with your left shoulder to raise and then lower your upper torso to the right just a little bit, ten times.
  4. Now raise your legs ninety degrees, crossing them at the ankles. Reach up with your hips to raise and then lower your lower torso just a little bit, ten times.

If and when you do these, it's totally okay to be as feeble and half-hearted as you feel. You're half-awake, you don't want to get up. Own it, girl.

Next: Stretch and balance while you brush your teeth!

Wheel Review: Sure Grip Sugar Wheels

Sure Grip Sugars 62mm/44mm 85A hybrid indoor-outdoor wheels for indoors
Exclusively at Sin City Skates, http://www.sincityskates.com/2nd/wheels/sg-sugar.html

Just a quick-and-dirty review of these wheels that I oh Oh OH for skating on the gym floor that Derby Lite skates on.

First, the stats:

Sure Grip Aerobic Sure Grip Sugar Radar Flat-Out Radar Mojo
Diameter 62 mm 62 mm 62 mm 62 mm
Width 37 mm 44 mm 44 mm 37 mm
Durometer 85A 85A 88A 88A
Hub - nylon nylon aluminum

So Sugars have the durometer of a typical outdoor wheel, the better to grip with, and also have the width of a typical indoor track wheel, the better to grip with. By comparison Aerobics are soft, but narrow and rounded (more manueverability, less stability). Flat-Outs are not as soft —grip enough for a normal floor, but not enough for our floor for me— but are wide and squared for stability. Mojos, which I have most recently skated on, are the same softness as Flat-Outs, but are narrow (and squared) for manueverability. I really loved my Mojos, I did. When I get bored of shooting around the turn like a bat out of seventh grade, I will think about whether I have enough movearound to get through a pack.

How they feel:

Or how I feel skating in them: like God. Okay not quite God, but pretty damn mighty. I don't have to hold back my strokes. I can lean like a lunatic. It takes an insane effort to slide out on these wheels. (It can be done, though! Very fast, very tight crossovers around the key!) All of my skating goes into skating, instead of half-skating and half-skidding. Instead of tiring out from trying to keep myself from sliding out and then not being able to keep myself from sliding out, I tired myself out from skating all out.

These are pretty specialty wheels, they're probably too grippy for a normal surface and way too grippy for a grippy surface like Orbit. I'm skating on Atom D-Rods (95A) now at Orbit. But if you're worried about when Derby Lite gets its own space and sport court, these can become your outdoor wheels problem solved. scratch that, I have the Radar Pures now & I don't think that the Sugars are interchangeable for outdoor wheels. For now I will say that the Sugars are great for funky indoor surfaces, the Pures are awesome for outdoor, and I'm liking these D-Rods for proper rinks and skate court surfaces...

What The Hell Am I Wearing

I think it would be fun to have pink legs, so I pick fuschia leggings to go with my pink skirt. Then I pick a brown tank top, and that works because the brown and the fuschia are the same value. I remember to pack my wedge sandals. Almost everything but not everything goes with black knee-high boots, which I keep along with this black short-sleeved cardigan in my locker at work like a superhero costume (see below). It's the black sweater, though, that's one color too many this day. I'm wearing it unbuttoned, casually, like a cape, so you know that this isn't part of my outfit, but still—

Dept. of Necessity: Power Bracelet!

I need a power bracelet!

I need a power bracelet that I can put on, like after I've eaten my breakfast, to signal to myself that it's time to get serious about work. Like Wonder Woman changing into her costume, but probably the other way around. Like Wonder Woman changing back into Diana Prince then. Because I'm not getting enough signal from having my hair up and putting on my boots and my little cardigan when I get in, but the bracelet will work—

Cauliflower and Chickpea Pasta Salad alla Zombea

1 head cauliflower
1 cup pecan pieces
12 oz whole wheat gemelli
1 can chickpeas
1/2 red onion
1 red bell pepper
3 Tbsp lemon juice
salt
pepper
1/4 cup olive oil

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Trim, wash, and cut cauliflower into bite-size florets. Toss the cauliflower and pecans on a cookie sheet with just a tiny bit of olive oil and salt. Roast until cauliflower is spotted golden brown, stirring around after ten minutes and about twenty minutes total.

Bring water to a boil for the pasta, dump in the pasta & cook until al dente, about five minutes or according to package directions. While the pasta is cooking, rinse and drain the chickpeas. Just drain the pasta right over the chickpeas in the colander, and let it all cool; you can also drain the pasta over the the diced red onions, below, to make them less sharp.

Finely dice the red onion and pepper. Measure the lemon juice into a large bowl and season generously with salt & pepper, then whisk in the olive oil. Stir in the red onion and pepper, then the pasta, chickpeas, and pecans.

Good on its own, or on a green salad.

Per 1/8 recipe (this makes a lot), 346 calories. Per 1/10 recipe on green salad, 317 calories.

What The Hell Am I Doing

I am crossing things off my to do list like you would if you crossed things off your to do list with a sword. Like Inigo Montoya crossing things off his to do list with his sword:

  • Take bike in for tune-up. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Brow appointment. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Calculate calories. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Resize doodles. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Order contact lenses. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Shop for clothes: black sweater, black no-show socks. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Surger t-shirts. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Organize red dresser. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
  • Order sugar wheels and gladiator knee gaskets. My name is Inigo Montoya...

The idea is, I cross every last thing off my to do list before my LA trip & then I have nothing to do but write when I get back. It occurs to me that my to do list is the six-fingered man. It always has that extra thing going on:

  • Now that I have my bike tuned up, I should ask my landlord if I can park it in the basement. So I don't always have to be asking pit crew to take off the front wheel and put it back on, and then I can ride it to work.
  • Or I need to get rid of this kitchen table, so I can park my bike in the kitchen like I used to.
  • Also I need to sort through my black leggings and separate the holey ones to wear for skating and the okay ones to wear for riding my bike to work.
  • And then I need some new black leggings.
  • And I need a few more a-line dresses or skirts for riding my bike to work.
  • MUST clean old bones to put in sugar wheels.
  • Should have borrowed Shannana's bearing press...

Oh and, PACK FOR LA TRIP.

Oh and, blog about some of the above:

  • Take pics of t-shirt surgeries

Maybe it will work out like I was thinking, I'll have nothing to do but write when I get back. I actually am thinking that I'll be writing less blog and more screenplay. I have my next Idea, which I haven't had time to blog about. Probably shouldn't blog about.

But maybe also, I think I'm not on a break. Like this is, this could be a normal life. I should add that I'm having a terrific time. Basically Thursday through Monday I'm out skating or with friends or skating with friends, like my life is a machine that makes fun & then I'm in two days to work on the machine like a fun machine mechanic. If I'm writing those two days when I get back, will the machine work on its own?

Two-Bean Pasta Salad alla Zombea

Adapted from and named after Zombea Arthur, all the more appropriate because it's good and goes fast! And it's vegan... GRAAAAINS...

1/2 lb green beans
1 cup walnut pieces
12 oz whole wheat gemelli
1 can kidney or pinto beans
3 green onions
3 ribs celery
1 green bell pepper
3 Tbsp cider vinegar
salt
pepper
sugar
1/4 cup olive oil
mustard

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Trim and wash green beans, and dry them with a paper towel. Toss the beans and walnuts on a cookie sheet with just a tiny bit of olive oil and salt. Roast until beans are shriveled and lightly browned, about ten minutes. Cut green beans into bite-size pieces.

Bring water to a boil for the pasta, dump in the pasta & cook until al dente, about five minutes or according to package directions. While the pasta is cooking, rinse and drain the kidney beans. Then I just drain the pasta right over the kidney beans in the colander, and let the pasta cool.

Finely slice the green onions and finely dice the celery and green peppers. Measure the vinegar into a large bowl and season generously with salt & pepper and maybe a teaspoon of sugar, then whisk in the olive oil and a tip of a spoonful of mustard to thicken. Stir in the green onions, celery, and green pepper, then the pasta, beans, and walnuts.

You can eat this on its own. But also a little pasta salad is good on a green salad, just saying—

Per 1/6 recipe, 439 calories. Per 1/8 recipe on green salad, 369 calories.

Green Salad with Hard-Boiled Egg, Salmon, and Avocado

a heart of romaine lettuce
a third of a 6 oz bag baby spinach
3 eggs
1 can salmon
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp olive oil
a little bit of mustard
an avocado

Quarter the romaine lengthwise and slice the quartered lettuce crosswise into bite-size pieces. Put romaine pieces and baby spinach into a salad spinner, wash and spin. Divide greens into two or three bowls or takealong containers.

Put the eggs in a small saucepan with some cold water and bring to a strong simmer. Cover and let stand for ten minutes, then drain and cover with cold water again. Peel and quarter two eggs, and save the third egg for your lunch salad.

Break apart the salmon with a fork & pick out the bones. Whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, and mustard & gently mix this dressing with the salmon.

Halve, peel, and slice the avocado into bite-size pieces. I use half an avocado for two salads, and refrigerate the pit half in plastic for later.

Top each salad with one egg, a third of the salmon, and a quarter avocado.

Per serving, 283 calories

What I'm Doing On My Summer Break

I'm apparently still on some sort of break. Or I'm having a series of rolling breaks: the week before last, two days off writing; last week, one day off work; this week, one day off skating; and next week is my actual summer break, my trip to LA.

Also last week, actually, I had two more days off writing:

  • one of which I used to organize my closet. Someday I may write about my closet, I love my closet. It used to be in the tiny room under the stairs that could be a tiny den or a huge closet & that is now pit crew's tiny den, and now my closet is all in the space at the foot of my bedroom.
  • and the other of which we watched True Blood, and that was all right.
But then I did, actually, get to SIT DOWN TO WRITE Sunday afternoon, because Derby Lite didn't have Sunday practice this weekend. For the spring session, Derby Lite practices have been smack in the middle of both weekend days & I like practice of course, but sort of haven't had weekends this session. Not the kind of weekend where you go to Lovely, a bake shop, and have a turkey sandwich and an iced coffee and read your books and write in your notebook all afternoon.

So I'm excited, I get those Saturday afternoons all summer session:

I guess what I am is between schedules, probably won't get into the full swing of this new schedule until I'm back from LA.

I'm still crossing things off my to do list, I'm halfway done with getting new contact lenses and getting new wheels for Orbit and for outdoors. I still have to go clothes shopping. It works out that there's no Derby Lite practice on the 16th, so I can pack and spend time with pit crew before I leave—

Summer Cooking Plan

Poppy, what do you need a cooking plan for? All you eat is yogurt and fruit, green salad, and peanut butter sandwiches!

Well, that is true. I guess it's just Sunday packing up yogurt and blueberry containers and sliced almond containers. And Monday and Wednesday when I make salad for dinner, a third of the green salad and a third of the little salad gets packed up for lunch; that doesn't really add up, that's only two lunch salads. Where are the rest of these salads coming from?
